Pizza Origin

Pizza, like so many other foods, did not originate in the country for which it is now famous. Unless you have researched the subject, you, like so many people, probably always thought Pizza was strictly an Italian creation.

Is the origin Italian or Greek?

The foundations for Pizza were originally laid by the early Greeks who first baked large, round and flat breads which they topped with various items such as olive oils, spices, potatoes and other things. Tomatoes were not discovered at that time or, very likely, they would have used them as we do today.

About the name:

You may think that the word pie refers to the crust, or the shape of the crust. But in fact, the word 'pie' may refer to the magpie. This was agreed by Webster, a lexiographer named Charles E. Funk, and Oxford English.

The magpie is a bird with feathers sploched of 2 different colors. This bird is called 'pica' by the Romans. Over time, the word 'pica' was changed by the English to 'pizza'. One of Americas favorite foods is now called Pizza because of the color variety of the bird, and its habit of gathering odds. Pizza is brought in because of its variety of, sometime odd, ingredients.
